How to Be a Good StepdadSelected

Five Superpowers To Teach Your Kids

Being a stepdad is definitely not an easy task. Sometimes you need to try much more than the biological moms and dads out there.

It can get pretty intense, but no matter how difficult, once you see those smiles on the kids’ faces, you’ll find it was all worth it. You need to know parents and stepparents are some sort of superheroes for kids.

You’re their role model and you need to take this role quite seriously.

It’s your job to teach the children some superhero abilities and tricks.

The kind of people they become will mostly be your responsibility, which is why you need to be 100% dedicated to your child’s growth and development. You and your spouse must thoughtfully consider all decisions potentially affecting your children’s maturity.

Most importantly, focus on the key things your kids must learn in order to be good people. Here are some of the things you can focus on.

Everyone has Talent

Your child may falsely believe they’re worthless if they aren’t good at math or sports or anything else. Especially when they notice a peer who is much better than them.

This is the time you need to have a talk about talents. Make sure to teach them everyone is good at something and reassure them of this often.

If your kid hasn’t found their talent is, assure them these things come naturally in time and it shouldn’t be a concern. Encourage them to try new things all the time in order to discover their hidden skills.

Believe in Yourself

Constantly work on maintaining your child’s confidence and boosting it when necessary. You can create a reminder of how great your child is by giving them inspirational posters, wall art, hot toys and bobble heads.

They can be of great help when your kid is facing any kind of hardships. Of course, make these relatable to your child by connecting these items with their favorite superhero or something similar.

Treat Others the Way you Want to be Treated

In order for your children to become good people, you need to “raise them right.” It’s often hard to explain why some actions are right and some wrong.

This is where the question “Would you be happy if someone did that to you?” works like a charm.

In case the situation is not as obvious, create an adequate metaphor with the same moral of the story.

No Man is an Island

Everyone needs friends every day. Whether we’re happy or sad, we have a natural need to share our feelings with people close to us.

This is why we need to cherish our friendships and invest in them. Explain to your kids what it means to be a good friend and how friendship works.

Tell them about support, help and an ability to listen and empathize.

Winning isn’t Everything

Another important lesson to learn is not everyone that loses is a loser, and vice–versa.

Teach your kids about competition and ambition, but don’t let them be blinded by it.

They should know that sometimes it’s much more important to take part in the race, than to finish first.

Sometimes just reaching the finish line can mean the world to you. Every experience teaches us something valuable.

Finally, it’s essential you treat kids like equals. If you are open and honest with them, they’ll reciprocate. This is the basis of every good relationship.

Once you have it, everything becomes much easier and you can rest assured your kid will come to you for help and advice, as well as share all important moments.

Seeing your kids become the superheroes you thought them to be will undoubtedly be the proudest moment in your life.
