How To Make Father’s Day Special For Your Stepdad
Father’s Day is a celebration to honor and appreciate fathers and father figures for contributing to their family. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the UK, Canada, India and some other parts of the world.
For some other countries, it is celebrated at different times of the year, for instance in Australia, this celebration holds on the first Sunday of September. In Norway, Finland and Sweden, it occurs on the second Sunday in November.
Many Catholic countries celebrate Father’s Day on St Joseph’s Day (March 19th)
Father’s Day History
The origin of Father’s Day dates back to the early 1900s with the first known Father’s Day service occurring in July 1908 at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in Fairmont, West Virginia
While missing her dad who had passed away in 1896, Mrs. Clayton requested for a Sunday service to honor fathers. Although it was the first service to honor fathers, it did not turn into an annual event.
Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was credited for being the one to popularize it even though several other people across the country had similar ideas for some years.
After listening to Mother’s day sermon in 1909, she thought it would be nice to honor fathers in the same way. The first Father’s Day in Spokane, Washington was observed on June 19th, 1910 and became an annual event afterward.
Thought Father’s Day celebration was widely recognized, it did not become a permanent national holiday for many years. President Richard Nixon eventually signed a law declaring Father’s day to be annually celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June.
