Pasta is one of the most popular comfort foods in the world and a fantastic source of nutrients. Today, you can splurge on your preferred pasta dish, whether you enjoy fettuccine Alfredo, meaty spaghetti bolognese, lasagna or are more intrigued by stuffed tortellini.

Pasta is so widely consumed that the entire month of October is unofficially designated as Pasta Month! On October 25, we observe World Pasta Day, while October 17 is National Pasta Day.

History

Many historians believe Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy after learning about it while exploring China in 1271. Pasta was reportedly present in Italy long before Marco Polo arrived from the East.

Italian Ponzio Bastone, for instance, left his heirs a bin of macaroni in his will he penned in the year 1279. The ancient Romans also manufactured dough or pasta made from flour and water.

Pasta was first brought to North America by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is believed to have visited Naples while serving as the American Ambassador to France during a trip to Europe when he had his first experience eating pasta.

He sent containers of macaroni and a pasta maker back to America in 1789 when he left. However, dry pasta wasn’t readily available until the 19th century, when a wave of Italian immigrants moved to North America and Canada and brought it with them.

The Canelli family, who immigrated from Italy in 1845 and started selling pasta on Montreal’s streets in 1867, was one of the first pasta manufacturers. So it didn’t take long for pasta to become a common meal in every home.

Pasta is so common because it can be easily prepared using whatever pantry essentials you have on hand, such as tomato sauce, basil, olive oil, onion, and garlic.

Add some cream, cheese, veggies, meat, fish, or other seafood. You may use your imagination while preparing it because it goes well with virtually anything.

Since pasta can be prepared in large quantities and because it is so comfortable, Pasta makes for the best family lunch.
