History of the International Day of Families
In 1983, the UN’s Economic and Social Council advised the Secretary-General on the significance of drawing attention to the difficulties and needs of families around the world. The impact of these issues has been a focus of the UN.
The same council requested that the UN consider launching a global campaign aimed at governments, other organizations, and the general public to focus on the problem of “Families in the Development Process” in 1985.
In 1989, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating 1989 as the International Year of the Family. Finally, in 1993, the United Nations established the International Day of Families, which is observed annually.
Since the creation of this day, the UN has developed several family-oriented policies and programs to aid in achieving its goals of addressing the demographic, social, and economic concerns that affect families worldwide.
