National Grandparent’s Day ~ Friday Humor
National Grandparent’s day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Every year, the president makes a proclamation to declare the Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.
History
This celebration was initiated because of the remarkable work of two people- Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. Reingold decided to do something to honor grandparents after attending a conference on aging in the White House. McQuade was concerned with the number of lonely and isolated grandparents in homes and decided to start a campaign for a special day for them.
National Grandparents Day was first celebrated in September 1961. President Carter’s speech gives an insight on why this day is so important:
“As we seek to strengthen the enduring values of the family, it is appropriate that we honor our grandparents.’’
