Five Modern Organization Tips

The key to modern design is keeping everything as simple and minimal as possible. According to Canadian furniture retailer Emfurn.ca, Minimalism is all about reducing things to their essential parts, focusing only on functionality. Allowing that to speak for itself.

There’s no need for anything ostentatious in the furniture itself – that’s what art and other decorations are for.

Here are some tips you can use to keep your home as clean and organized as possible, using all the fundamental principles of modern organization and storage.

  • Pick a Color Scheme

A color scheme might not help you with your organization and neatness. However, it will undoubtedly help tie the room together.

A foolproof modern color palette is mostly neutral with pops of contrasting colors, or you can play with different shades of the same color.

This will help prevent the room from looking too crowded or busy. While also providing a solid canvas for you to hang art or photographs on the walls, so it doesn’t seem bare.

Some people revel in having a consistent color theme for each room. This can also help narrow down your choices of new storage bins when you’re shopping!

  • Shelving Units

Shelving units are by far the best way to stay organized (aside from keeping yourself in check and donating or throwing away things you don’t need or use!). Feel like your closet is a black hole?

There are plenty of racks and shelves specifically made for that purpose. Have piles of random things you don’t know where to put?

Organize them as best as you can according to their function and find somewhere useful to put them. The great thing about shelving units is they come in so many different shapes and sizes.

There are giant bookcases for your office and smaller cube-type units for other rooms. There’s always the option of installing so-called “floating” flat shelves right into the wall, so you don’t have more furniture taking up space on the floor.

Corner shelves are a great help for this particular purpose.

  • Rolling Carts and Drawers

These are great additions to any room. Luckily they come in a bunch of different sizes, colors, materials, and more.

You’re going to be more than able to find a handy storage unit that matches the theme of any room. If they come with wheels, they’ll be easy to move around if you rearrange furniture or feel you’re in need of extra storage in another room.

Drawers are a great place to throw things you know you should keep but don’t know exactly where else to put them. They provide a flat surface that can act as a side table or somewhere to put more bins on top of for additional storage.

  • Use Hooks

Hooks are a great way to keep things sorted out without taking up room in bins or on the floor. A set of pegs in the mud room or back hall is a great place to store coats after coming into your home.

Over-the-door hooks are a great place to keep towels in the bathroom or to organize purses in your closet. The possibilities are endless.

  • Under-the-Bed Storage

Don’t have a bed that comes with drawers built into the bed frame? No need to worry.

All you need is to invest in some bins or storage cases.

This is a great place to store weather-specific clothing during the off-season if you prefer to keep your closet filled with things you’re likely to wear every day. There are also plenty of cases with compartments explicitly made for shoes that merely slide under your bed. These compartments keep each shoe protected from dust – which is excellent for opening up room in your closet.

If you’re worried it will look unsightly, simply pick up a beautiful big blanket that hangs down the floor on either side of the mattress, or push your bed up against the wall so you there’s one less exposed side to worry about.

We all know keeping your home clean and organized is a task in itself.  However, by following these simple tips, you’ll surely be ahead of the game.
