Stepfathers Protect Children

I didn’t follow the Casey Anthony trial closely but just based on the bits and pieces I heard and read led me to suspect she was guilty of something.   After all what mother allows her child to go missing for weeks without reporting it the authorities?  Casey’s behavior after her daughter went missing was also questionable to say the least.  After reading more about the case in preparation for this post I realize her receiving a murder conviction wasn’t as clear cut as I initially thought.    The sad facts are two year old Caylee’s life is over and she would be still be alive today if she received the care, protection and attention she needed.

Over three million child abuse cases are reported in the US every year.  About 5 kids die each day as a result of child abuse.  Children are most often abused by a  family or household member.   Here are some of the signs of child abuse:

Physical Signs of Child Abuse

1. Unexplained burns, cuts, bruises or welts in the shape of an object
2. Bite marks
3. Anti-social behavior
4. Problems in school
5. Fear of adults

Emotional Signs of Child Abuse

1. Apathy
2. Depression
3. Hostility or stress
4. Lack of concentration
5. Eating disorders

Sexual Signs of Child Abuse

1. Inappropriate interest or knowledge of sexual acts
2. Nightmares and bed wetting
3. Drastic changes in appetite
4. Overcompliance or excessive aggression
5. Fear of a particular person or family member

Signs of Neglect

1. Unsuitable clothing for weather
2. Dirty or unbathed
3. Extreme hunger
4. Apparent lack of supervision

These signs can be the result of other factors and are not positive indicators of child abuse.  If you suspect a child you know was abused:

DO NOT INVESTIGATE ON YOUR OWN and

DO NOT CONFRONT THE ABUSER.

Taking these actions could seriously interfere with getting appropriate help for the child and put the child and/or you in danger.  If you feel a child is in imminent danger in the US call 911.   The following table identifies child protective resources around the world if you see your country isn’t listed please do some research and find out.  Please send info to me at info@supportforstepdads.com and I’ll add it to the table.  Thank you.
